An open letter to the U.S. Congress

3 Steps to Support Democracy in Myanmar

6 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers!

Democracy is under vicious assault in Myanmar. America must act. Today, in cities throughout Myanmar, millions of people are participating in an unprecedented civil disobedience movement (CDM). Since Feb 12th, midnight extrajudicial arrests have begun against CDM leaders, election officials and all “enemies of the junta.” As of Feb 27th, at least 9 people have been murdered by the military and 771 have been extrajudicially arrested. The military are escalating violence against their own citizens daily. The situation is grave. Elected representatives and their colleagues in the U.S. Congress must consider the suffering of Myanmar’s people, and take further action on behalf of their desire for democracy. This can be accomplished in 3 ways: 1) DO pursue sanctioning the countries who bankroll and support the Myanmar military. These include Singapore, China, Russia and others. 2) DO consider further bankrolling of the civil disobedience movement. The US can undermine the junta by financially supporting and promising future support to all those engaged in the CDM. 3) DO recognize and interact with the lawful government elected by the people (Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw – CRPH) DO NOT recognize the unlawful authority of the military junta. We who enjoy the benefits of democracy have a duty to stand in solidarity and to take decisive action on behalf of those who also desire democracy for themselves. The Myanmar people long for democracy. Please hear their cries as they put their lives at risk for the sake of a more perfect union in Myanmar. Please use your influence to take action on their behalf.
