An open letter to State Legislatures (CA only)

I am writing to urge you as my representative to prove concern for rape and domestic abuse victims by voting in support of AB 812 & SB 530 to repeal CA Penal Code 262 and treat spousal rape as equal to non-spousal rape under the law. This archaic legislation maintains the view of a wife as her husband’s sexual property. It is simply unreasonable and incomprehensible to establish a distinction in punishment based on a survivor’s relationship, or lack thereof, with their abuser. Rape is universally acknowledged as a crime of violence that is both physically and psychologically harmful to the victim. Here in California, rapists who are convicted under spousal rape law may face less severe sentencing and may not have to register as a sex offender. Rape is rape, regardless of the relationship between a rapist and their victim, and AB 812 & SB 530 eliminate this distinction so we can ensure justice for victims of sexual assault. I am counting on you as my representative to vote in favor of AB 812 & SB 530 Petition
