President Trump plans to hold a rally in Washington Crossing Park in Upper Makefield on the afternoon of Saturday, October 31.
I am very concerned about this rally being held in our small community. Contract-tracers have found that many Trump rallies become super-spreader events for COVID-19 due to participants ignoring guidelines for social distancing and mask use. Having an in-person rally on Saturday and then having residents crowd into schools and churches and other polling places on Tuesday is a recipe for disaster. Our area has managed the pandemic so well and I do not want to see our cases and hospitalizations rise as a result of an event like this.
I am also concerned about taxpayers having to bear the cost of police overtime and likely additional park maintenance due to this event. A 2016 Trump rally left nearby Newtown Township with a bill of almost $20,000 for crowd control, traffic management and backup security provided by police and fire personnel. The Trump campaign never paid this bill, according to news reports, though a local business owner contributed to the township's costs.
I also fear that, particularly in light of all the recent rain, a large crowd will cause damage to our beautiful park grounds.
Please help us by doing whatever is possible to limit the size of attendees at this event and to ensure that participants wear masks and follow social distancing guidelines to protect our entire community.
