An open letter to the U.S. Congress

On 1/6/2021, for the first time since 1814, the halls of Congress were breached, not by a foreign adversary but by a horde of domestic terrorists intent on subverting the democratic will of the American people through violence, intimidation and lawless authoritarianism. Although they ultimately failed, those responsible for inciting and perpetuating this reprehensible violation of the People’s House must be held accountable for their actions, unless we would risk creating a precedent of appeasement and submission to armed mobs and the shameless grifters who stoke them to violence for political capital. During the congressional certification of the 2020 election, thousands of President Trump’s most vitriolic supporters descended upon and occupied both chambers of Congress. Members of Congress were forced into hiding. No fewer than five people were killed and many more were injured in what has been rightly described as a “siege” of American democracy. America is no stranger to brutality, and the roots from which fascism grows (expansionism, colonialism, imperialism, racial segregation, psueudo-science, personality cults, and anti-intellectualism) can be found in every chapter of our Nation’s short history. This explosion of anti-democratic violence did not occur in a vacuum. Despite what our most mislead and most misleading elected officials might say, it did not occur at the behest of a few antifascist activists. This was a planned and purposeful attempt at insurrection that was premeditated in internet chatrooms and has been given life by a handful of deeply irresponsible and opportunistic partisans hacks. As your constituent, I demand that each and every member of any U.S. Legislative body who abetts, encourages, empowers, endorses, or enables, in any way, the violent and seditious conduct that took place in the Capitol and around the country on January 6, 2021 and thereafter be immediately expelled from their position in that legislative body and permanently disqualified from any future public office. I echo the growing bipartisan sentiment expressed by current and former state legislators, current and former US legislators, and local, state and national community leaders by demanding the expulsion and disqualification from any future public office of the following seditious legislators currently representing the people of Arizona: US Congressman Andy Biggs US Congressman Paul Gosar US Congresswoman Debbie Lesko US Congressman David Schweikert The dangerous conduct exhibited by these legislators on, after, and in the weeks preceding 1/6/2021 was unlawful, unbecoming of elected officials, and unacceptable in a democratic republic. Their continued presence in the legislature would be a permanent blight on our government’s legitimacy and an insult to every American who died in defense of freedom, democracy and the right to vote. We have been blessed with a republic, if we can keep it. We cannot keep both a republic and seditionists.
