An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures Please Help Ensure Equitable Treatment by Law Enforcement
15 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers! I ask that you listen to the voices of the SC Legislative Black Caucus and take the four specific actions to ensure equitable treatment by law enforcement for all South Carolinians:
1. ensuring that the body camera mandate is fully funded, and that this existing law is being adhered to at every level of law enforcement in our state (local, county, statewide).
2. that proposed Hate Crime legislation be moved forward in the general assembly, passed and signed into law.
3. that the legislature and Governor take a close look at law enforcement practices, and file a bill to require psychological testing of law enforcement officers, and to review use of force standards and training guidelines for law enforcement.
4. the Governor starts a Task Force on Police Engagement and law enforcement practices, which includes a fair representation of the youth of our state.
As a white South Carolinian, I stand in solidarity with my neighbors and friends of color who are crying for their voices to be heard. I hope you will honor their stories and their needs at this critical moment in our nation's history.
