An open letter to the U.S. Congress

8 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers!

As an engaged and active constituent, I request that the senate not confirm another supreme court nominee until after the next president is sworn in on January 20, 2021. This follows the precedent set four and a half years ago, when Republicans refused to hold a hearing or an up-or-down vote on Merrick Garland. In doing so, the Senate invented the principle that they shouldn't fill an open seat on the Supreme Court in the months before an election and a new president is sworn in. The rule of law, the legitimacy of our courts, the fundamental workings of our democracy all depend on precedent, and that means applying the same principles in the current situation. As my Senator, I ask you to have the respect and decency to honor Ruth Bader Ginsburg's outstanding service and respect her dying request.
