The behavior shown by police officers in Seattle during recent protestors is unacceptable. They escalate violence, mace and assault protestors — including children! — and turn off their body cameras while doing it. They are making us less safe and reinforcing every negative stereotype about the police. You must reign them in. I insist that you require all police officers to activate body cameras whenever they deploy with riot or other tactical gear; display their badge and badge numbers prominently; fire any officer who escalates violence or assaults anyone with their weapons, including chemical irritants or bicycles; investigate Mayor Durkan’s decision to announce a curfew mere minutes before it took affect; and investigate Mayor Durkan’s ongoing determination to protect the police from oversight. You must also investigate the specific instances of police brutality discovered from the last two nights, including the use of chokeholds and knees on throats, macing civilians, shooting at protestors with irritants and rubber bullets.
