Crucial Structural Change - Please Help Abolish Qualified Immunity

60 so far! Let’s get to 100 signers!

I am reaching out to request that you please sponsor/support Justin Amash's 'Ending Qualified Immunity Act' bill. Time after time, qualified immunity has provided a bureaucratic/legal loophole for police to escape with no liability upon unquestionable evidence of civil rights infringement. Just last year, qualified immunity was granted to Fresno officers accused of stealing more than $225,000 during a search, Idaho police who bombarded an innocent woman's home with tear gas grenades, and a Georgia office who tried to kill a family's dog, but accidentally shot a 10-year-old boy instead, all on the grounds that the rights involved weren't "clearly established." The culture that is established by qualified immunity, disincentives plaintiffs to even file lawsuits in the first place, as there is such low probability that they will win their case. Abolishing qualified immunity does not guarantee the end of police brutality, nor will it guarantee all police brutality civil rights lawsuits will be won. But it is a crucial step to help in disincentivizing abuse of authority by police, and to eliminate an arbitrary barrier that prevents cases being heard and decided on their merits. I urge you to please seize this opportunity to help implement such vital structural change that will impact our communities forever!
