The changes to section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act limit nondescrimination protections for members of the LGBTQ community seeking medical care and puts transgender people particularly in danger of losing access to the most basic medical care.
The first amendment of our Bill of Rights guarantees freedom of/from religion for everyone in the United States. In recent years, this has been interpreted to allow people to discriminate against those who are LGBTQ on the grounds that our 'lifestyle' violates the religion of others.
The weaponization of the first amendment as a tool of discrimination against others is completely contrary to the spirit of the first amendment, and now endangers the lives of real people who are entitled to medical care without fear of discrimination.
I urge you, in the interest of the well being of your constituents and Americans all over the country, to urge the president to reconsider these changes to section 1557 of the ACA. The right to discriminate against others under the guise of 'religious freedom' should not be enshrined as an American value.
