An open letter to the U.S. Senate Young Adults Need Your Support; COVID-19 stimulus bill
8 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers! I have a concern about the COVID-19 stimulus check bill. By my interpretation, as the bill stands, young adults who were filed as dependents will not get a stimulus check, nor will their parents receive $500 if they are over the age of 16. This overlooks a large population of individuals who are impacted by this pandemic.
It will affect me as a current college student who was recently let go from their job as a result of the virus. Although many college students have been claimed as dependents, we still have rent, tuition, car, and other bills to pay. Many of us rely on college housing that has been closed and many scrambled to fund travel back home or find a new living space.
As the government encourages us to stay home unless absolutely necessary, many young adults may not experience symptoms of the virus while still being contagious. Additional financial support may allow these individuals to stay home rather than going to work when they feel ill or believe they have been exposed.
I ask that you look into this issue for the many tax paying, voting, American citizens who are in crisis that will receive no support. Young adults will certainly remember who supported them in this crisis when it comes time to vote.
