Free Telecommunications for Detained Immigrants

24 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers!

I am writing to request your leadership in protecting detained immigrants and their loved ones by providing phone and video calls free of cost during this time of crisis. Due to the fact that ICE has halted visitation programs around the country, people in detention have no free way to communicate with their family, friends, or legal counsel. Individuals are forced to rely solely on the phone or internet for communication while the detention centers are making it costly to do so. It is imperative in this time of social isolation and financial instability to respect the dignity of detained persons, their loved ones, and their need for connection. We are asking that you do everything in your power to ensure families and lawyers have access to regular communications channels with incarcerated loved ones or clients, including but not limited to phone calls, email, video conferencing, and postage mail. Limits on calls, emails, and video conferencing should be removed, and the fees should be waived. Everybody deserves freedom of communication.
