An open letter to the U.S. Congress Protect LGBTQ+ people's access to medical care
13 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers! I am disturbed by reports indicating that the Trump administration intends to roll back HHS regulations that prohibit medical providers from refusing to care for LGBTQ+ individuals. Not only is this deeply immoral, unjust, and contrary to the Hippocratic principles of modern medicine, the fact that they are choosing to do this in the middle of the current COVID-19 pandemic is simply unconscionable.
It is absolutely vital that the government continue to require healthcare providers provide equal access to care for all members of our society, especially those in vulnerable populations like the LGBTQ+ community. Denying care to a gay or trans person for their sexual or gender identity is no different than denying care to a black person for their race, or someone with autism because of their medical condition. Federal regulations must continue to enshrine these people's access to care.
