I am both horrified and disgusted at the way Donald Trump used gas and other irritants in peacefully demonstrating young people.
I saw and heard live video coverage of journalists and protestors running and coughing. I saw riot police in full body armor beat, kick, and knock down peaceful protestors.
My congresswoman Lucy McBath wrote to her constituents to condemn the president’s actions, but I have heard nothing from Senators Loeffler and Perdue.
How can you claim to represent Georgians in Washington when you do and say nothing to denounce the president’s abuse of sacred symbols. He used gas and rubber bullets to clear clergy members from the steps of their own church! They were there to provide water and snacks to protestors who were exercising their constitutional rights of freedom of speech and freedom of assembly.
He threatened to deploy the US military on US soil against American citizens. He and Bill Bar lied to the public by implicating Antifa and the far left in the violence. Why do the senators from Georgia say nothing? Silence deems consent. They give an autocratic president tacit approval when they say nothing to protect the civil liberties of Americans.
I am sickened by what looks like this president’s attempt to seize power during a global pandemic.
Over forty million Americans are out of work. The senate refuses to even consider more relief. Over a hundred thousand Americans have died, and militarized police are abusing and murdering Black Americans in the street. It’s all on camera.
I pray that the senators from Georgia look within and find their shared humanity with those who do not look or live like them—white, wealthy, and connected to power.
