An open letter to the U.S. Senate Concerns with Stimulus Package 2020
21 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers! I have a very important question: Why does the current stimulus package exclude college students or adults age 18-24 from receiving any benefits from our federal government? I am 22 years old and I recently graduated from University of Arkansas-Fort Smith in December of 2019. I pay my taxes every year like every other hardworking American, but I am still excluded from receiving any benefits from the stimulus package simply because my parents claim me as dependent. I work in the restaurant industry, and have been working only 6-8 hours a WEEK since Governor Hutchinson declared the shutdown of restaurants and bars. I think that it is ridiculous and irresponsible to exclude not only adults like me, but my parents from receiving anything from the stimulus package. Families with children under 17 will receive $500, but my parents will collect absolutely nothing for me only because I "aged out" and they continue to claim me as a dependent. I am very angered and upset that our Arkansas senators let this legislation pass without even considering one of the poorest demographics in the United States.
