End qualified immunity

22 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers!

Support the bill to end qualified immunity. It has repeatedly been used to shield law enforcement from being held accountable for use of excessive force. This doctrine is a far cry from the Civil Rights Act of 1871, in which the Court recognized that officers who violated the constitutional rights of victims could be sued. Qualified immunity has significantly reduced the likelihood of cases of excessive force employed by law enforcement reaching trial, as the need to demonstrate “clearly established” precedent is an extreme and unjust hindrance to victims. Abolishing this doctrine would not only provide relief to parties who faced violation of their rights by officers, but it would incentivize greater regulation of law enforcement.
