FEDERAL MISUSE OF FORCE
Greetings. I am a voting constituent in rural west Texas. The march toward authoritarianism continues, even accelerating it seems. While our President touts his bringing back of incandescent lightbulbs and dirty water for the people, he is also strapping on federal forces and deploying them to Portland, OR. He seems incapable of taking meaningful action on the pandemic that is killing the people and the country, but give him an excuse to use force against those same people and he’s all in. Because that shows he’s oh-so-tough doncha know. Federal law enforcement officers have been using unmarked vehicles to drive around downtown Portland and detain protesters since at least July 14. Personal accounts and multiple videos posted online show the officers driving up to people, detaining individuals with no explanation of why they are being arrested, and driving off. Federal officers from the U.S. Marshals Service and Department of Homeland Security have stormed Portland’s streets as part of President Trump’s promised strong response to ongoing protests. The feds have repeatedly deployed tear gas to scuttle protests, despite a newly passed state law that bans local police from using the chemical irritant except to quash riots. On Saturday, federal agents shot a man in the face with a less-than-lethal munition, fracturing his skull. Local officials, from the mayor to the governor, have asked the president to pull the federal officers out of the city. “This political theater from President Trump has nothing to do with public safety,” [Oregon Gov. Kate]Brown said in a statement. “The President is failing to lead this nation. Now he is deploying federal officers to patrol the streets of Portland in a blatant abuse of power by the federal government.” Since you always claim to not know much about anything the President is doing, I thought you’d like to know he’s busily reviving stop and frisk. This time with camo-wearing, unidentified, federal stormtroopers blindfolding and kidnapping American citizens. And the state of OR, which would count itself among those begging for a federal response to Covid-19, wants them gone. What’s wrong with this picture?
