An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives

Stimulus Bill

6 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers!

It is absolutely unacceptable for the stimulus bill to exclude one of the poorest demographics in the country. College-aged students who are claimed as dependents will receive $0, but at the same time are expected to pay rent, utilities, food, and other expenses. A majority of us support ourselves, a majority of us have lost our jobs, a majority of us are facing eviction and food insecurity. Are we not worthy of assistance? Instead of any financial help, we are instead told that grocers and drugstores are hiring hundreds of thousands of employees. The issue is not job scarcity. This issue is the expectation for us to IGNORE isolation and social distancing measures, in order to survive. We are also immunocompromised. We have loved ones who have cancer, we also need to stay inside and "flatten the curve". Instructing us to continue to risk our health for minimum wage and zero hazard pay is downright insulting. Not only that, but it is also dangerous. The college students working the jobs deemed essential are far more likely to come into work with symptoms, because we cannot afford to lose the income. But that is the only option for us at this point, because the stimulus bill has completely left us out. I urge you to pursue action to assist us. I urge you to do SOMETHING to prevent us from being evicted, starved, and abandoned. Please.
