An open letter to the U.S. Congress Convene a task force to address racial inequities in policing
89 so far! Let’s get to 100 signers! There is a crisis happening right now. It involves accountability and faith in our law enforcement institutions. Black people and their allies are showing up to demand solutions to inequities around treatment by police. The time for change is long overdue, and I request that a task force be convened at the federal level to hear from groups with a stake in this issue. Many politicians have offered perspectives on rioting as a language of outrage without offering any perspective on the impetus behind these demonstrations. Among those who have addressed the underlying issues, few have offered meaningful solutions. As a constituent, I implore you to create this task force with the clear goals of ensuring accountability and changing law enforcement training procedures going forward. We cannot undo what has been done, but we must do what we can to prevent the continuation of these often fatal injustices that make a mockery of the American ideal of equal treatment.
