An open letter to the U.S. Congress

full accessibility for all Americans in the CPD's remaining 2020 debates

10 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers!

We, the American public, understand that the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD), which oversees and sponsors the 3 presidential and only vice presidential debates of this 2020 general election cycle, is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that is independent of the federal government. However, we ask you to petition the CPD so that the remaining debates be fully accessible to every American, especially those who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, by having an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter included in the debates' live feeds which are distributed to news outlets and networks across the country and around the world. As illustrated by the first presidential debate hosted from the Cleveland Clinic hospital and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio on September 29th, there were multiple instances of cross-talk and overlapping speakers, which strained the closed captioning systems, which on top of that, are delayed and aren't shown live in real-time. These debates are crucial to the election cycle and therefore, we ask you to adopt ASL interpretation so that all American know what the candidates on stage are saying for the future of this country, because what they say right now on those stages is a glimpse into our collective future as a country and as a democracy, whether it be a continued Trump-Pence administration or a new Biden-Harris administration. Every American plays a part in the civic process that is a cornerstone of our democracy, especially by watching the CPD's debates. Please do not let our fellow Americans in the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities be excluded from these important conversations.
