Urgent Call to Stop the Shadow Repeal of Police Accountability Law S8496/A10611

623 so far! Let’s get to 1,000 signers!

I am writing as your constituent to express my grave concern about the effort to undermine police accountability reform across New York State, including in New York City and the City of Buffalo. On June 9th, your office heeded the call of local organizers and passed S8496/A10611, a bill that repealed a secrecy law (50-A) that blocked police misconduct and disciplinary records from being released to the public. Less than two months later, this legislation is under attack from police unions across the State. The Buffalo Police Department (BPD) union and the New York Police Department (NYPD) union recently filed lawsuits whose express aim is to prevent police misconduct records from ever seeing the light of day. Even worse, the City of Buffalo, who was named as the defendant in the BPD union lawsuit, has made statements suggesting they plan to cave and allow these vital police accountability records to remain hidden. I am calling upon you as someone who understands the importance of this legislation to tell the police unions to stop shrouding police records in secrecy once again. Not only are these lawsuits attempting a “shadow repeal” of S8496/A10611, it is contrary to the will of the people, including victims of police brutality who demand transparency and justice. Please tell the City and the Mayor to defend S8496/A10611 in Court, and please let Judge Sedita in Buffalo and Judge Failla in S.D.N.Y know that the unions' request for secrecy is contrary to the intent of S8496/A10611, which is making police misconduct records available to the people.
