Reform NYC’s 2021 Budget

14 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers!

I am writing to demand accountability for the NYPD’S abuse of protesters. I urge you to defund the NYPD in the 2021 city budget. The NYPD's $6 billion budget is more than expenses on health, homeless services, youth development, and workforce development combined. The current budget plan would take away resources from our most vulnerable, hardest hit communities to fund the brutality we have been seeing in the streets. Youth programs, including ones made to divert from incarceration, are being cut by 32% while the NYPD is only being cut 0.38%. We need a fair budget that protects our frontline and essential workers, begins to address the horrifying racial inequities that are killing Black and brown people at shocking rates, gets homeless people into safer lodgings, particularly at a time like this, and supports our kids and our teachers throughout this traumatic disruption in the school year. The NYPD needs reform--not more money at the cost of our city's most marginalized and vulnerable people. Especially in this pandemic, can we count on you to vote for significant cuts to the NYPD in order to fund our city’s many other critical priorities in this crisis?
