An open letter to the U.S. Senate Nominating Justice Ginsburg’s replacement
8 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers! In 2016, when President Obama nominated Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court during an election year, Senator Cornyn said, "At this critical juncture in our nation's history, Texans and the American people deserve to have a say in the selection of the next lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. The only way to empower the American people and ensure they have a voice is for the next President to make the nomination to fill this vacancy."
Senator Cruz concurred by saying, “It has been 80 years since a Supreme Court vacancy was nominated and confirmed in an election year. There is a long tradition that you don’t do this in an election year.”
I expect you both to honor the principles you stated so clearly and emphatically four years ago. It is particularly important for you to do so this year in order to preserve any shred of honor or decency you may yet possess. To betray those principles simply because it benefits your party's agenda would reveal serious character deficiencies.
Sadly, acting in your party's interests ahead of the interests of all Texans and all Americans is precisely what I expect you will do. Please prove me wrong. Do the right thing. Empower Texans and the American people by ensuring they have a voice. Uphold the 80+ year tradition of refraining from filling a Supreme Court vacancy in an election year. Allow the next President to nominate Justice Ginsburg's replacement.
