Oklahoma House Bill 1343- A Dangerous Precedent

To: Sen. Warner, Rep. Wittman, Sen. Kaine

From: A constituent in Midlothian, VA

February 3

I am writing to voice my deep concerns regarding Oklahoma House Bill 1343, which seeks to transfer mental health and substance abuse services to the Department of Corrections. While this is not a Virginia bill, I am alarmed by the precedent it sets and the potential for similar policies to emerge in our state. Treating mental health and substance abuse primarily as criminal justice issues rather than public health concerns is a dangerous approach. The Department of Corrections is not equipped to provide the specialized care and treatment necessary for individuals struggling with these challenges. This move risks further criminalizing vulnerable populations rather than offering them the support and rehabilitation they need. Virginia should be investing in accessible community-based mental health and addiction services rather than shifting responsibility to the corrections system. I urge you to stand against any similar efforts in our state and to prioritize policies that expand mental health care access, improve treatment options, and reduce the unnecessary incarceration of individuals who need medical help, not punishment. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response on this critical issue.
