Blanche’s Deal Killed the Fund. It Kept the $100M Trump Tax Shield. Look Closer.

To: Sen. Warner, Sen. Kaine, Rep. Subramanyam

August 3

Dear Members of Congress, Late Sunday night, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced a deal with Republican Senators Cornyn and Tillis: the $1.8 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund — which could have paid out to January 6 rioters — would be formally rescinded. The senators declared victory and agreed to advance Blanche’s nomination as permanent Attorney General. We urge you to look more carefully at what actually happened. Blanche issued two orders Sunday night — not one. The first killed the fund. The second quietly preserved the provision that grants Trump, his sons, and the Trump Organization sweeping immunity from IRS audits of their past tax returns. That immunity remains fully intact. Legal experts estimate it represents a personal financial windfall for the Trump family approaching $100 million. Senators Cornyn and Tillis asked for two things: kill the fund, and narrow the IRS immunity. They got the first. The second was clarified — not narrowed. The Trump family’s tax audit shield was preserved in full, repackaged in language designed to look like a concession. In exchange, Todd Blanche — Trump’s former personal criminal defense attorney — will now be confirmed as the permanent Attorney General of the United States. The American people were told this was a win for congressional oversight. It was not. It was a trade: rioter payouts the administration likely couldn’t defend in court anyway, exchanged for permanent financial immunity for the First Family and a loyalist installed at the head of the Justice Department. We demand that Congress examine both orders in full before Tuesday’s confirmation vote, that Senators Cornyn and Tillis account publicly for what the second order actually preserves, and that no vote proceed until the American people understand exactly what was traded away on their behalf. This is not a deal. It is a distraction. Respectfully,
