The KOSA Bill and its threat to Free Speech and Information

To: Sen. Booker, Sen. Kim, Rep. Watson Coleman

From: A constituent in North Plainfield, NJ

July 30

I am writing this to make an urgent message regarding the Kids Online Safety Act. While it may have good intentions tied together, the likeliness of this bill to possible law being abused is strong. It is borderline censorship and surrenders the privacy and security of many individuals even further. Sensitive subjects would cease to be discussed or searched, due to the toll gate requiring identification. Toll gate being the security measures put in place on a website, regardless of whether or not it is safe for work. It should be up to the parents to make sure their children don’t end up in the wrong places on the net, not our government. I write all this in saying that you should vote no on the bill. Like with previous proposals such as SOPA, or the Stop Online Piracy Act, it will enact a high level of censorship to information and resources many people need access to. Whether it be visual, auditory, or written works will not matter. Only going in with the mindset of “think of the children” is a dangerous practice. And there needs to be better communication on what is safe and what is not for everyone.
