Oppose Greenland Acquisition Proposals and Maintain Current Strategic Partnership

To: Justices Court

From: A constituent in Round Lake, IL

January 10

I am writing to urge you to publicly oppose any proposals for the United States to acquire Greenland through military force, purchase, or a Compact of Free Association arrangement. President-elect Trump's January 7 press conference, where he refused to rule out military force to acquire the island and called American ownership "an absolute necessity," represents a dangerous and costly departure from effective strategy. The United States is already achieving all three of its geostrategic objectives in Greenland under the current engagement approach. We maintain military access through Pittufik Space Base, which supports critical missile warning, missile defense, and space surveillance missions. American firms can access Greenland's critical minerals through a 2019 cooperation agreement, with Greenland's 2024 foreign policy strategy explicitly welcoming U.S. investment. Chinese influence has been successfully blocked since 2019, with no major attempts by Chinese actors to establish presence since then. This success costs American taxpayers less than $50 million annually. Denmark currently provides Greenland with over $700 million per year in administrative support and direct economic transfers. Any free association arrangement would require the United States to replace Denmark as Greenland's primary supporter, increasing our costs by 1,000 percent while alienating a stalwart NATO ally by interfering in what Copenhagen considers internal Danish affairs. Pursuing Greenland acquisition through any means would damage critical alliances, waste taxpayer resources, and undermine American credibility without advancing our security interests. The current strategy of targeted economic incentives, diplomatic engagement through our Nuuk consulate, and cooperation on mining investment delivers results at a fraction of the cost. I urge you to speak out against these proposals and support maintaining our cost-effective partnership with Greenland and Denmark that already secures American interests in the Arctic.
