Oppose DHS Funding Bill and Stand With Democratic Values
To: Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez
From: A verified voter in Camas, WA
January 26
I am writing to express my deep disappointment in your vote for the Department of Homeland Security funding bill on Thursday. As one of only seven House Democrats to support this legislation, you broke with your party at a critical moment when Democratic leadership, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, and Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, opposed the misuse of taxpayer dollars to brutalize U.S. citizens.
The bill passed 220-207, with nearly every Democrat voting no. Your vote enabled funding for President Trump's immigration enforcement crackdown that has resulted in tragedies like the killing of Renee Nicole Good. While you cited concerns about Coast Guard services for Pacific County fishermen and FEMA for flood response, these justifications ring hollow when weighed against the human cost of aggressive immigration tactics targeting American citizens.
Your statement criticized both the administration's overly aggressive tactics and your own party's position on ICE. This false equivalence is unacceptable. Democratic voters in Washington's 3rd Congressional District elected you to stand with our values, not to provide bipartisan cover for harmful policies. Your pattern of breaking with the party, including voting for the Republican funding bill during the last shutdown and supporting the controversial SAVE Act, suggests a troubling willingness to align with Republican priorities.
I understand you represent a purple district, but that does not mean abandoning core Democratic principles. Voters need representatives who will fight for humane immigration policies and protect civil liberties, not enable enforcement actions that harm communities. The agencies you claim to protect could have been funded through alternative measures that did not support this administration's dangerous agenda.
I urge you to reconsider your approach and vote with House Democrats on future funding bills. Your constituents are watching, and we expect you to represent our values in Congress.
