Veto HB2787 to Protect Mexican Gray Wolves
To: Gov. Hobbs
From: A verified voter in Tucson, AZ
April 13
Veto HB2787. This bill, sponsored by Representative Lupe Diaz, would prohibit Arizona and its local governments from cooperating with the Mexican Wolf Reintroduction Program in direct defiance of the federal Endangered Species Act.
Mexican gray wolves are the most endangered wolf subspecies in the world, with only around 286 individuals remaining. They play a critical role in our ecosystem, and their recovery depends on continued cooperation between state and federal wildlife agencies. HB2787 would sabotage decades of conservation work to appease cattle ranchers who have been lobbying the Trump administration to delist the species entirely.
Arizona should not abandon its responsibility to protect endangered wildlife because one industry objects. This bill sets a dangerous precedent of state interference with federal conservation law and threatens the survival of a species that belongs in our wild lands. Veto HB2787.
