I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed Ohio Prenatal Equal Protection Act, which seeks to ban and criminalize abortion, IVF, and certain forms of contraception. This bill directly contradicts the will of Ohio voters, who decisively approved the Ohio Reproductive Freedom Amendment in 2023, enshrining the right to reproductive healthcare in our state constitution.
Ohioans made their voices heard loud and clear when 57% of voters supported the amendment to protect access to abortion, fertility treatments, and contraception. The introduction of this bill disregards the democratic process and undermines the fundamental rights that Ohioans fought to secure.
Beyond its blatant defiance of voter-approved protections, this legislation would have devastating consequences for individuals and families across our state. IVF has helped countless Ohioans build their families, and contraception is a cornerstone of reproductive healthcare. Criminalizing these essential medical services would strip Ohioans of their bodily autonomy and endanger lives.
Furthermore, this bill’s attempt to classify abortion as homicide is extreme and dangerous. It would not only punish individuals seeking reproductive care but also create a climate of fear and uncertainty for healthcare providers. The Ohio Constitution guarantees the right to make personal medical decisions, and this proposed legislation seeks to override that protection through unconstitutional means.
I urge you to respect the will of the people and reject this harmful and unconstitutional bill. Ohioans deserve lawmakers who uphold their rights, not those who seek to dismantle them. I ask that you stand with the majority of voters and defend the reproductive freedoms that Ohioans have already secured.
