Protect libraries: Hubs of knowledge and community growth
To: Rep. Demetriou, Sen. Roegner

April 6
Public libraries play a vital role in providing access to knowledge, resources, and opportunities for personal and community growth. The proposed $100 million cut to the Public Library Fund would severely undermine the ability of libraries across Ohio to serve their communities effectively. Libraries are not just repositories of books, but hubs for workforce development, early childhood education, senior services, and so much more. Slashing their funding would deprive countless Ohioans of these essential resources and programs. Furthermore, restricting materials related to sexual orientation and gender identity for those under 18 raises concerns about infringing on intellectual freedom and equal access to information. Libraries have always been bastions of free inquiry and exploration, allowing individuals to learn, question, and understand different perspectives safely. Imposing limitations based on age or content goes against the fundamental principles of libraries as welcoming spaces for all. I urge you to reconsider these proposed measures that would cripple one of our state's most valuable public institutions. Instead, increased funding should be provided to allow libraries to expand their offerings and better serve the diverse needs of our communities. An investment in libraries is an investment in the future of Ohio and its people. I respectfully request that you work to protect and strengthen this crucial resource for all Ohioans.
