An Open Letter

To: Sen. Curtis, Sen. Lee

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

April 23

I am writing to you today as a constituent from Salt Lake City to express my profound disappointment regarding your position on the inclusion of the SAVE Act in the recent budget reconciliation process. As a remote professional who values both civic participation and the integrity of our democratic institutions, I believe that the SAVE Act does a disservice to the American people. Rather than addressing genuine threats to election security, this legislation introduces unnecessary barriers that threaten to disenfranchise millions of eligible citizens. The requirement to provide specific documentary proof of citizenship in person creates a significant, and for many, insurmountable, hurdle. My concern is not just for the logistical burden this places on everyday Americans—particularly the elderly, rural voters, and those with limited access to resources—but for the fundamental principle that our government should be making it easier, not harder, for eligible citizens to exercise their right to vote. Furthermore, existing law already prohibits noncitizens from voting in federal elections. Adding these restrictive, punitive measures seems like a solution in search of a problem, serving only to intimidate election officials and create an environment where eligible voters are at risk of being purged from the rolls due to bureaucratic error. I urge you to reconsider your support for this legislation as it moves through the committee process. Please focus your efforts on protecting the franchise for all eligible Americans and strengthening our democracy through inclusion rather than restriction. I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on this matter and learning what specific steps you intend to take to ensure that no eligible voter in Utah is negatively impacted by these changes. Thank you for your time and for your service to our state.
