I am very happy to donate money to specific candidates who are doing the important work of being an actual opposition to the Trump regime: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Mark Pocan, Jasmine Crockett, Chris Murphy, Jamie Raskin, and Ilan Omar here in Minneapolis. But until the Democratic Party makes the commitment to become an actual opposition party, I cannot in good conscience donate generally.
What this would look like would include (but not be limited to) the following:
(1) "Every Democrat publicly commits to only voting for a clean government funding bill that does not cut funding to essential programs or include poison pill riders that attack fundamental freedoms and has real, ironclad safeguards to stop Trump and Musk from hijacking federal spending." (Indivisible Guide)
(2) "Democrats use every opportunity to play procedural hardball." That means EVERY opportunity.
(3) "Seriously, just refuse to vote for a MAGA budget." Do the opposite of what James Carville has advocated for; he's wrong. Dead wrong.
(4) Have Democratic House Reps and Senators go to Republican district and states, and hold Town Halls, open to the public, answer questions and make the case for what is so wrong right now.
(5) Have regular - weekly, if not daily - press conferences, with speakers like Pete Buttigieg, who can expose the lies, mistakes, and callous brutality of the Trump regime. To make sure you don't burn Secretary Pete out, get a Shadow Cabinet to do all of this, with the pols I have mentioned already.
This isn't rocket science, but it does involve changing from a "business as only a little unusual" approach to understanding the dire threat that the Trump regime poses to the very bedrock of the republic, and becoming an actual, effective opposition. Doing anything less will not be effective. This crisis is calling you to stand up and fight - when you are ready to do that, I will be happy to donate. But. Not. Until. Then.
