Protect State Rights
To: Sen. Scott, Rep. Salazar, Sen. Moody
From: A constituent in Miami, FL
June 9, 2025
I am writing to you today as a concerned constituent to express my grave concerns regarding the potential deployment of federal military forces to California against the express wishes of our local and state governments. Such an action would represent a dangerous precedent and a significant overreach of federal power, undermining the principles of federalism and local control that are foundational to our democratic system. The Posse Comitatus Act generally prohibits the use of the U.S. military for domestic law enforcement purposes, and while exceptions exist, deploying troops when local authorities are actively opposing it raises serious questions about the intent and necessity of such a move. The potential dangers of this action are manifold: * Erosion of Trust: Sending federal troops into a state without the consent of its leadership would inevitably erode trust between the federal government and its citizens, potentially leading to increased unrest and division. * Escalation of Tensions: Military presence in civilian affairs, particularly without local consent, can easily escalate already sensitive situations, risking unintended conflict and harm to civilians. Our communities are best served by law enforcement and emergency services that are accountable to local authorities and understand the unique needs of our residents. * Undermining Democratic Process: The will of the people, as expressed through their elected state and local officials, should be respected. Bypassing these officials sends a clear message that local governance is irrelevant, which is a direct threat to our democratic process. * Misallocation of Resources: The U.S. military is trained and equipped for national defense and international operations. Deploying them for domestic issues when local resources are available and capable represents a misallocation of vital national resources and distracts from their primary mission. I urge you to publicly oppose any attempts to deploy federal military forces to California against the will of our state and local governments. Instead, I ask that you advocate for collaborative solutions that respect states' rights and empower local communities to address their own challenges. Thank you for your time and consideration of this critical issue. I look forward to your response and your commitment to upholding the balance of power and the will of your constituents.
