Reject UPLIFT Act Undermining Colorado's Immigrant Protection Laws

To: Gov. Polis, Sen. Liston, Rep. DeGraaf

From: A constituent in Colorado Springs, CO

March 2, 2025

The UPLIFT Act introduced by Representative Evans directly opposes current Colorado laws like HB 23-1100, HB 19-1124, and SB 21-131 that prevent local law enforcement from being compelled to assist federal immigration authorities detain undocumented immigrants who have not committed serious crimes. This act would prohibit policies limiting such cooperation, forcing communities to divert resources towards immigration enforcement rather than prioritizing public safety. As a Colorado resident concerned about maintaining the state's approach of building trust with immigrant communities through limiting deportations, I reject the UPLIFT Act for undermining these established laws and values of inclusion. Colorado's protections for undocumented residents should be respected, not preempted by an overly aggressive federal immigration agenda misaligned with current state policies.
