Oppose HR 9495. It could be used to target non-profits.

This bill risks empowering the executive branch to target legitimate non-profit organizations without sufficient due process or transparency. While combating terrorism financing is important, existing laws already prohibit supporting designated terrorist groups. Creating a new "terrorist supporting organization" designation that the Treasury Secretary can unilaterally apply to any non-profit is an overreach that undermines constitutional protections. The vague criteria and lack of evidentiary requirements could enable the arbitrary suppression of dissenting voices, civil society groups, and charities whose views or work are disfavored by those in power. Even if ultimately exonerated, the reputational damage from such a designation could be irreparable for non-profits relying on public trust. This bill jeopardizes freedom of association and represents an unconstitutional expansion of executive authority over the non-profit sector. As a voter committed to preserving civil liberties and checks on government power, I urge you to oppose this unnecessary and dangerous legislation. Existing laws provide ample tools to combat material support for terrorism without compromising foundational rights.
