According to the USGS hazard map (https://www.usgs.gov/media/images/mount-rainier-volcano-hazards-and-lahar-arrival-times-puyallup-and-nisqually-river), areas in the Puyallup and Nisqually River valleys face risks from destructive lahars originating from Mount Rainier. The map shows estimated arrival times for these fast-moving volcanic mudflows, clearly identifying hazardous zones. To ensure public safety, development within mapped lahar paths must cease. Existing infrastructure in high-risk areas requires evaluation, with potential relocation plans. Public education about these hazards and proper emergency response is critical. By restricting new construction in known lahar zones and implementing mitigation efforts, the vulnerability of these communities to future Mount Rainier eruptions can be significantly reduced.
