Do not support House Bill 3537
To: Rep. Mace
From: A constituent in Mount Pleasant, SC
December 29, 2024
I am writing to express my profound concern regarding the recent bill you are supporting that seeks to impose the death penalty on women who seek abortions. As one of your constituents, I urge you to reconsider your stance on this legislation. Not only does it contradict a pro-life philosophy, but it is also scientifically and morally counterproductive to the well-being of the citizens you were elected to serve. The foundational principle of the pro-life stance is to value and protect life. Advocating for the death penalty as a punitive measure against women fundamentally undermines this principle. It replaces compassion and support with fear and punishment, alienating those in need rather than addressing the root causes of their choices. Pro-life policies should aim to create environments where life is cherished through access to healthcare, social support, and education—not through draconian measures that perpetuate cycles of harm. Moreover, this proposed legislation is profoundly counterintuitive from a scientific and public health perspective. Decades of research have shown that criminalizing abortion does not eliminate it but instead forces women to seek unsafe procedures, resulting in preventable deaths and long-term health consequences. According to the World Health Organization, restrictive abortion laws correlate with higher maternal mortality rates. A more effective approach would be to invest in evidence-based policies that reduce unintended pregnancies, such as comprehensive sex education and affordable access to contraception. These measures not only align with public health priorities but also reflect a commitment to reducing abortion rates without resorting to punitive actions. Furthermore, this legislation fails to consider the complexities and nuances surrounding abortion decisions, including cases involving life-threatening medical conditions, rape, or incest. Such situations require compassion and understanding, not blanket criminalization that punishes vulnerable individuals. As a representative, your duty is to enact policies that uplift and serve your constituents. This bill does not serve the women of our community or the families who rely on them. Instead, it perpetuates injustice, jeopardizes lives, and undermines trust in leadership. I implore you to reconsider your support for this legislation and instead advocate for compassionate, science-based solutions that honor the dignity and sanctity of life at all stages. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response and to seeing you prioritize policies that genuinely benefit our women.
