I am writing to urge you to cosponsor and support the Guaranteed Paid Vacation Act, currently introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Seth Magaziner.
This legislation would guarantee at least two weeks of paid vacation time to every full-time worker in America—a basic protection that employees in every other major economy already enjoy. Currently, nearly one in four American workers—more than 33 million people nationwide—receive no paid vacation time whatsoever.
The need for this policy is clear:
- Work-life balance: Almost 40% of workers report being on the job at least 45 hours weekly, with the average full-time worker logging 43 hours per week
- Family time: Without guaranteed paid vacation, many families cannot afford to spend time together, undermining fundamental family stability
- Worker health: Extended work periods without rest contribute to burnout and stress-related health issues
- International standing: The United States remains the only major nation without federally guaranteed paid vacation
The bill has earned endorsement from numerous labor organizations including the UAW, SEIU, NEA, National Nurses United, and many others representing millions of working Americans.
I ask that you take a principled stand on this issue. Providing paid vacation is not a radical proposition—it is a reasonable expectation for workers who contribute to America's economic success. I hope you will join the growing coalition of lawmakers supporting this measure.
