Subject: Opposition to Efforts to Strike Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Dear Representatives,,
I am writing to strongly urge you not to support or participate in any lawsuit aimed at striking down Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This essential provision protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination in programs that receive federal funding. Removing these protections would be unjust and set a dangerous precedent that threatens the civil rights of all marginalized communities, including those discriminated against based on gender and gender identity.
Discrimination in any form weakens the fabric of our society. Allowing protections for people with disabilities to be eroded creates a culture where exclusion and hardship are normalized rather than addressed. Section 504 has been instrumental in ensuring that individuals with disabilities have equal access to education, healthcare, employment, and public services. Its repeal or weakening would disproportionately harm some of the most vulnerable members of our communities, increasing hardship and inequality.
Furthermore, discrimination based on physical ability, health conditions, gender, or gender identity is fundamentally inhumane. History has shown us that when the rights of one group are stripped away, it often leads to further attacks on the rights of others. If Congress supports efforts to dismantle protections for people with disabilities, it risks opening the door to more attacks on anti-discrimination laws that protect all marginalized groups.
I urge you to reject any effort to strike Section 504 and stand firm in defending the civil rights of all Americans. Please reaffirm your commitment to upholding the dignity, inclusion, and equal treatment of every person, regardless of their physical abilities or identity. The strength of our nation is measured by how we protect our most vulnerable citizens, and I hope you will choose to be on the right side of history.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response and to seeing your leadership in protecting the rights of all Americans.
Sincerely,
A concerned United States citizen
