Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) claimed its aim was to root out “waste, fraud and abuse” in government and that it has saved $160 billion through its efforts (a huge markdown from Musk’s original prediction of $2 trillion). But in the final analysis, it may have created a huge burden for taxpayers. A nonpartisan watchdog group is crunching the numbers related to DOGE’s efforts, and they estimate that the agency’s actions will cost US taxpayers up to $135 billion this fiscal year. When will congress step up and close this illegal “department” and save the other structures in our crumbling democracy?
