Defend States' Electoral Integrity
To: Sen. Tillis, Sen. Budd
From: A verified voter in Holly Springs, NC
August 19
I'm writing because I'm deeply concerned about President Donald Trump's proposed unconstitutional order that seeks to interfere with elections run by the states. It seems he hasn’t learned this important lesson from his first term.
As you well know, our constitution tasks the states—not the executive branch—with managing elections, and even limits the degree to which Congress can impose restrictions on such elections. (See Article 1, Section 4, where states are granted primary authority regarding "Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections").
President Trump's alarming overreach demands your immediate response to protect North Carolina's electoral integrity and the constitutional rights of all citizens, in NC and beyond. This overreach is due to his tanking popularity and his fears that the Democratic Party will take control during the midterms and put an end to his authoritarian regime.
In short, it demands that you behave as an elected official who represents your constituents, not the Republican party. In particular, a great many of your constituents depend upon mail-in ballots, which are safely used across the world in many countries (Pres. Trump's lies notwithstanding) and are the primary manner of voting in several U.S. states with no appreciable impact on election integrity.
The time to object is now, before this absurd plan moves any further and while doing so has the greatest potential to be successful. I urge you to uphold the basic principals of federalism, once a major consideration of the NC Republican Party.
