'Let Them Take Out Los Angeles.' Congress Must Respond. Now.

To: Sen. Kaine, Rep. Subramanyam, Sen. Warner

From: A constituent in Lovettsville, VA

October 6

Dear Members of Congress, On October 5, 2026, the President of the United States stood at a campaign rally in Nebraska and said the following about the ongoing war with Iran: "Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego." Those are his words. Verbatim. Confirmed by ABC News, Forbes, Axios, and multiple other outlets. At least 19 American servicemembers have died in this war. The war was launched without congressional authorization, in violation of the War Powers Act. Gas prices remain elevated. And the President of the United States, at a campaign rally, said "let them take out" two of America's largest cities — home to more than 10 million civilians and 115,000 active duty military personnel and their families. The condemnation was swift and bipartisan. Governor Newsom called the remarks "deranged and dangerous." Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said they could "compromise our safety." San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said "San Diego is not collateral damage." Republican Jim Desmond, running for Congress in San Diego County, said he "vehemently disagreed" with the President's comments. We are not asking you to interpret what the President meant. We are asking you to respond to what he said. A president whose public statements about an active war are so unclear that they require official clarification within 24 hours — a president whose own party's candidates are distancing themselves from his words — is a president whose fitness for office demands congressional scrutiny. The 25th Amendment exists for this moment. Congressional oversight exists for this moment. Your oath of office exists for this moment. If you are not raising your voice every single day about what is happening — the unauthorized war, the casualties, the remarks about American cities — then you are not doing your job. And your constituents will remember that in 28 days.
