Do Not Defund 988

To: Sen. Crapo, Rep. Simpson, Sen. Risch

From: A constituent in Rexburg, ID

May 7

The federal government's proposal to eliminate specialized services for LGBTQ+ youth on the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is deeply concerning. Maintaining and expanding access to vital mental health resources should be a top priority. Nearly 1.3 million LGBTQ+ individuals have reached out to 988 since its launch last year, underscoring the critical need for this support. Research shows LGBTQ+ youth face heightened risks, with 40% considering suicide in the past year alone. Cutting services proven to save lives would be devastating. As a nation, we must prioritize safeguarding the wellbeing and mental health of all citizens, especially vulnerable populations. Robust funding for 988 and its specialized services is imperative to prevent further tragedy. I urge reconsideration of this harmful proposal and reinvestment in this vital lifeline.
