Thank You — and Please Act to Defend Our Democracy

To: Sen. Murkowski

From: A verified voter in Anchorage, AK

January 28

Thank you for your clear and principled statement regarding the killing of Alex Pretti and your insistence that ICE agents do not have carte blanche to use deadly force. Your call for an independent investigation and Congressional oversight matters, and I appreciate your willingness to speak out. Now I am asking you to go further. Our democracy is at stake. The actions we are witnessing from this administration are not isolated mistakes — they reflect an accelerating slide toward authoritarian rule. When federal agents kill U.S. citizens, suppress dissent, and operate without accountability, that is a direct threat to the Constitution you swore to defend. This is what fascism looks like in practice, and President Trump is governing as if the rule of law no longer applies to him or his administration. Congress cannot issue statements alone. It must act. I urge you to use every tool available to you — hearings, funding restrictions, public accountability, and bipartisan leadership — to rein in ICE, halt abuses of power, and stand as a bulwark against an executive branch that is testing the limits of our democracy. History will remember who spoke up and who stood firm when it mattered most. I hope you will continue to be one of the senators who chose courage over silence.
