An Open Letter

To: Rep. Bentz

From: A constituent in Prairie City, OR

March 3

It may be time to pull out your pocket Constitution and revisit Article I. Congress has a clear responsibility to exercise its own authority and stop allowing the executive branch to usurp powers that the Constitution explicitly assigns to the legislative branch. If the situation truly rises to the level of a “war,” as you have described it, then Congress must act accordingly. The Constitution is unambiguous: it is Congress—not the executive—that has the power to declare war. The first step should be to halt unilateral executive action and then follow the constitutional process by openly debating and voting on whether the nation should be at war.
