Deloitte's $2.4B Tax Dodge Scheme Needs Investigation

To: Sen. Kaine, Rep. Beyer, Sen. Warner

From: A constituent in Arlington, VA

October 25, 2024

I am writing regarding the troubling revelations about Deloitte's potential role in marketing a $2.4 billion tax avoidance scheme to Liberty Global - and possibly to other corporations. As your constituent, I am deeply concerned about the impact of such aggressive tax dodging on our nation's revenue and the fairness of our tax system. This is not an isolated incident. The court documents reveal Deloitte's deep involvement in "Project Soy," a complex offshore tax maneuver that the Justice Department claims Deloitte actively marketed to Liberty Global. A federal judge has already ruled against this scheme, calling it tax evasion. Even more concerning is Deloitte's refusal to disclose whether they sold this same tax dodge to other multinational corporations. As tax law expert Reuven Avi-Yonah notes, "the vast majority of American multinationals could have benefited from this." The potential scale of lost tax revenue could be staggering. I would like to know: 1. Do you support strengthening IRS enforcement against these sophisticated corporate tax schemes? 2. Will you push for investigation into whether Deloitte marketed this same tax dodge to other clients? 3. What is your position on holding big accounting firms accountable when they design aggressive tax avoidance schemes? Our nation's ability to fund critical services depends on everyone, including large corporations, paying their fair share.
