As a concerned parent of an autistic child, I want to voice my strong opposition to the discriminatory "Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity Act" (Bill 3927). This bill would prohibit institutions like schools and universities from promoting diversity, equity and inclusion programs that are crucial for ensuring equal opportunities for all students, including those with disabilities like autism. Autism is a neurological condition, not an indicator of merit or ability. By banning efforts to accommodate diverse needs and promote inclusivity, this bill threatens to undermine the successful futures of students on the autism spectrum. They deserve the same access to education and resources as their neurotypical peers through tailored support systems and inclusive policies. Neurodiversity should be embraced, not discriminated against under the guise of "merit-based" policies that ignore the realities marginalized groups face. I urge you to reject this harmful legislation and instead champion laws that create a truly equitable learning environment for all children in South Carolina, regardless of disability status. An inclusive society benefits us all.
