Concerns about Delaney Hall and the use of force against protesters

To: Gov. Sherrill

From: A verified voter in Parsippany, NJ

May 30

As a New Jersey resident and US citizen, I am profoundly disturbed by the reports of inhumane conditions and treatments happening inside Delaney Hall Detention Center. I am grateful for the seriousness with which you seem to be taking this matter, for showing up in person and attempting to see the conditions yourself, even though you were denied, and sent inspectors, who were also denied full access. But the images and reports coming out from last night of how our state police handled the situation with the protesters is extremely concerning. What were the instructions the police were given when approaching the scene? The level of intimidation and use of chemical weapons seems uncalled for when there's been no account of violence from these protesters themselves. I worry that there is an attempt to discourage people from joining these protests and exercising their freedom of speech. The people involved in these protests have brought great attention to a matter that deserves great attention. These detention centers should not even exist, let alone be creating profit off the suffering of our fellow human beings. I hope you are doing everything in your power as Governor to hold DHS and Geo Group accountable for how they are treating the people being held in Delaney Hall, as well as protecting the safety and rights of the people showing up and voicing their concerns and opinions in a publicly democratic setting.
