I am writing as a Colorado resident to urge the creation of a state-managed Colorado Food Benefits Fund, independent of federal programs like SNAP. Recent disruptions and political instability at the federal level have made clear that our state must have its own safety net to ensure no Coloradan goes hungry when federal benefits are delayed, reduced, or compromised.
A state-administered fund would allow Colorado to provide consistent support to families in need, especially during federal shutdowns or administrative interruptions. It could be structured to complement existing programs—using state revenues, public-private partnerships, or surplus budget allocations—to maintain food access for residents who depend on timely assistance.
Food insecurity directly impacts community health, school performance, and local economies. Establishing a Colorado Food Benefits Fund would affirm our state’s commitment to public welfare and independence in protecting basic human needs.
I respectfully request that you sponsor or support legislation to establish this fund and direct the appropriate departments to research implementation options. Colorado has the capacity and moral obligation to ensure stability for its people, regardless of federal dysfunction.
Thank you for your time and for your continued service to our state. I look forward to your response and any updates on potential legislative or budgetary discussions regarding this proposal.
