Dear Governor DeWine, I am writing to express my deep concern about House Bill 8 and to strongly urge you to veto this harmful legislation. As a licensed professional clinical counselor and a resident of Ohio, I feel compelled to advocate for the rights, safety, and well-being of LGBTQIA+ youth and the families, educators, and counselors who support them. HB 8, framed as a “parents’ rights” bill, risks undermining the trust and confidentiality that LGBTQIA+ youth desperately need in their relationships with teachers, counselors, and other trusted adults. Research consistently shows that supportive environments and trusted allies significantly reduce mental health risks, including depression and suicide, among LGBTQIA+ youth. By forcing educators and counselors to disclose sensitive information against a young person’s wishes, this bill would put vulnerable youth in harm’s way and exacerbate mental health crises already prevalent in this population. Moreover, HB 8 erodes the ability of trusted professionals to act in the best interest of the children they serve. It sends a chilling message to those who work tirelessly to create inclusive, supportive spaces in our schools and communities. Ohio should be fostering environments where all children can thrive—regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity—not enacting policies that marginalize and endanger them. Governor DeWine, you have long been an advocate for children and families in Ohio. Vetoing HB 8 is an opportunity to affirm your commitment to protecting all young Ohioans, particularly those who face systemic discrimination and social isolation. I urge you to reject this legislation and instead champion policies that promote inclusivity, compassion, and evidence-based practices to support our LGBTQIA+ youth.
